The 17th SAG Awards were held in Hollywood tonight. There were no real surprises. “King’s Speech” took home the coveted outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture, while “The Social Network” went home empty handed.

Chrisian Bale won outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role while Melissa Leo took home the female equivalent. Natalie Portman was Best Actress and Colin Firth scored with his performance in the “King’s Speech.” Jeffrey Rush gave an intelligent, heartfelt speech in accepting the award on behalf of his fellow cast members.

Natalie Portman provided the evening’s one impromptu moment by uttering the word “asshole” when talking about what her parents told her never to be on a movie set.

Christian Bale’s speech was interrupted by real-life Dicky Eklund, the character he portrayed in “The Fighter.” Eklund joined him onstage in an unexpected moment. Bale politely thanked Eklund and gently pointed him back to his place in the audience. (“Fighter” star/producer Mark Wahlberg revealed moments later that he encouraged Eklund to go up if Bale won.

Ernest Borgnine received the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award and seemed truly touched and perhaps a little sad that his 94 years have slipped by. Mr. Borgnine is still fit and spry with an attractive, younger wife and maybe that is his secret for longevity. One thing is for certain. He has had an illustrious career in film. He has just finished his164th film. Borgnine is best known for film roles in “From Here to Eternity, “The Wild Bunch,” and “Marty,” for which he won a best-actor Oscar, as well as for his television work on the popular 1960s show “McHale’s Navy.”

The race is now on for the Academy Awards, and by all indications it looks like “Social Network” has lost some of it’s heat with “The King’s Speech” becoming increasingly more recognized by the various guilds this award season.
