Paris Hilton was booked by Las Vegas police after the socialite was found to have cocaine in her purse Friday night.

The Las Vegas Police Department have released few details about the case but a police official told CNN Hilton was riding in a black Cadillac near the Wynn Hotel when police smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle and pulled it over. Both Hilton and the driver were arrested.

Hilton has since been released and there are no details on her pending court appearance to face charges.

Update:

Sunday, August 29, 2010. 10 a.m.

In a statement to RadarOnline.com on Saturday, Paris Hilton’s attorney David Chesnoff says, “Paris Hilton was released this morning on her own recognizance. This matter will be dealt with in the courts not in the media and I encourage people not to rush to judgment until all of the facts have been dealt with in a court of law. There will be no interviews and no more comments at this time.”

Meanwhile, reports are also surfacing that Vegas police did not follow standard procedure during the arrest.

Paris was taken into the security offices at the Wynn and searched there, a source has told media outlets. “Cops discovered the cocaine inside the security offices where Paris was taken. Because Paris was taken away from the scene where the car was pulled over, this could potentially be an illegal search of a person.

Sorry Guys. Too Late for That.

Since the release of the fifth tape revealing Mel Gibson’s mad rants and threats against his former girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, his team have gone into overdrive to present Mel as an up-standing citizen and fine husband and father to his multitude of kids.

They have found audio experts to state that the tapes have been “tampered” with even after various top experts for the CIA and the FBI have analyzed the tapes and conformed their authenticity.

They have also convinced Mel’s ex wife, Robyn Gibson to write a letter to the court to state that “Mel never engaged in any physical abuse of any kind toward me before, during or after our marriage.” Robyn also claims that there was never any domestic violence perpetrated by Mel against any of their children.

Wonder if the fact that Mrs. Gibson is due to receive upwards of $450 MILLION dollars from her divorce from the insane actor have anything to do with her stepping up to save his reputation. Nah. It couldn’t be.

Gibson’s lawyers say he was set up but there is a ton evidence to indicate the opposite. Oksana’s teeth were knocked out, there is a bruise on their baby’s chin, allegedly from when Mel hit Oksana while she was holding the child. Oksana’s son is also reported to have witnessed the verbal abuse of his mother.

Next they will claim Gibson’s traffic stop and subsequent anti-semitic rant to a Malibu police officer was also a set up.

Poor Mel. The world is out to get him. Him and OJ Simpson. Both victims.

Please! Someone from Gibson’s camp get this abusive, angry old man some help before he hurts someone, or even worse, kills someone or maybe self destructs from the venom brewing inside him. Compared to him, Lindsay Lohan is Mother Terresa.

One thing for sure. We will be hearing a LOT more about Gibson in the coming months.

Conan O’Brien was justifiably rewarded with an Emmy nomination for his short lived tenure on “The Tonight Show” edging out the returning bore Jay Leno and the bitter, cynical tone of David Letterman’s “Late Show with David Letterman.”

That seems to be the only bit of excitement at the Emmys this year. It is again the usual suspects. “The Office,” Tina Fay, Steve Carell, so on and so on, except for the nomination of Edie Falco for “Nurse Betty” and Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton from“Friday Night Lights” who got nods in the lead acting categories, recognition they have both deserved for years now.

“Friday Night Lights” has gone mostly ignored by Emmy voters. Seems a show about ordinary American lives holds little interest for the Academy.

Also great to see Bill Maher get another nod, though he has been a consistent loser in past year. He currently holds 22 losses. No wins.

Matthew Fox of “Lost” also finally received a nomination after many years on TV

Charges Eventually Dropped.

Hollywood celeb Paris Hilton was arrested after a World Cup match in South Africa on Friday but subsequently released without charge.

She appeared late Friday in a FIFA World Cup courtroom after being arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana at a quarterfinal match between Brazil and the Netherlands.

The authorities dropped the charges against Hilton, after her co-accused, Jennifer Rovero, “acknowledged to be in possession of cannabis, and pleaded guilty,” said Brig. Sally De Beer, a spokeswoman for South African police.

Rovero, 31, from New York, was sentenced to a fine of 1,000 rand ($130) or 30 days imprisonment, De Beer said.

Hilton appeared in a special FIFA World Cup court around midnight local time. The courts are set up for the duration of the soccer tournament, so cases can be turned around in days — rather than many months, even years, as is common in the country’s overwhelmed justice system — and sometimes harsh sentences are imposed.

A publicist for Hilton, 29, said the incident was a “misunderstanding.”

Should actors who took a lot of money to star in a crappy sequel be punished if they turn around and talk openly about what a lousy experience it was?

That’s the question L.A. Times writer, Patrick Goldstein is asking in his column, The Big Picture this week.

The debate erupted when word surfaced that Megan Fox had been dropped from the upcoming “Transformers 3″ after she slammed the film’s director, Michael Bay, having recently said of the director that “he wants to be like Hitler.”

Now Shia LaBeouf is getting heat for acknowledging that Steven Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” was a snooze, having said (in the course of promoting his new sequel, “Wall Street 2,” in Cannes) that “when you drop the ball, you drop the ball. You can blame it on the writer and you can blame it on Steven. I’ll probably get a call. But he needs to hear this.”

Hollywood actors are celebrated when they oppose the war in Iraq or bash George Bush, they are encouraged to lobby Congress for a thousand different pet causes and given awards for supporting free speech, but when they dare to say that some lackluster sequel was a dud or that Michael Bay is a tyrant on his film set, they are sent to the woodshed, accused of being disrespectful and told their careers could be in jeopardy.

Only in Hollywood is truth telling considered heresy.

I CAN REMAIN SILENT NO LONGER!

Throughout my seven months since September 26, 2009, the date of my arrest at Zurich Airport, where I had landed with a view to receiving a lifetime award for my work from the representative of the Swiss Minister of Culture, I have refrained from making any public statements and have requested my lawyers to confine their comments to a bare minimum. I wanted the legal authorities of Switzerland and the United States, as well as my lawyers, to do their work without any polemics on my part.

I have decided to break my silence in order to address myself directly to you without any intermediaries and in my own words.

I have had my share of dramas and joys, as we all have, and I am not going to try to ask you to pity my lot in life. I ask only to be treated fairly like anyone else.

It is true: 33 years ago I pleaded guilty, and I served time at the prison for common law crimes at Chino, not in a VIP prison. That period was to have covered the totality of my sentence. By the time I left prison, the judge had changed his mind and claimed that the time served at Chino did not fulfill the entire sentence, and it is this reversal that justified my leaving the United States.

This affair was roused from its slumbers of over three decades by a documentary film-maker who gathered evidence from persons involved at the time. I took no part in that project, either directly or indirectly. The resulting documentary not only highlighted the fact that I left the United States because I had been treated unjustly; it also drew the ire of the Los Angeles authorities, who felt that they had been attacked and decided to request my extradition from Switzerland, a country I have been visiting regularly for over 30 years without let or hindrance.

I can now remain silent no longer!

I can remain silent no longer because the American authorities have just decided, in defiance of all the arguments and depositions submitted by third parties, not to agree to sentence me in absentia even though the same Court of Appeal recommended the contrary.

I can remain silent no longer because the California court has dismissed the victim’s numerous requests that proceedings against me be dropped, once and for all, to spare her from further harassment every time this affair is raised once more.

I can remain silent no longer because there has just been a new development of immense significance. On February 26 last, Roger Gunson, the deputy district attorney in charge of the case in 1977, now retired, testified under oath before Judge Mary Lou Villar in the presence of David Walgren, the present deputy district attorney in charge of the case, who was at liberty to contradict and question him, that on September 16, 1977, Judge Rittenband stated to all the parties concerned that my term of imprisonment in Chino constituted the totality of the sentence I would have to serve.

I can remain silent no longer because the request for my extradition addressed to the Swiss authorities is founded on a lie. In the same statement, retired deputy district attorney Roger Gunson added that it was false to claim, as the present district attorney’s office does in their request for my extradition, that the time I spent in Chino was for the purpose of a diagnostic study.

The said request asserts that I fled in order to escape sentencing by the U.S. judicial authorities, but under the plea-bargaining process I had acknowledged the facts and returned to the United States in order to serve my sentence. All that remained was for the court to confirm this agreement, but the judge decided to repudiate it in order to gain himself some publicity at my expense.

I can remain silent no longer because for over 30 years my lawyers have never ceased to insist that I was betrayed by the judge, that the judge perjured himself, and that I served my sentence. Today it is the deputy district attorney who handled the case in the 1970s, a man of irreproachable reputation, who has confirmed all my statements under oath, and this has shed a whole new light on the matter.

I can remain silent no longer because the same causes are now producing the same effects. The new District Attorney, who is handling this case and has requested my extradition, is himself campaigning for election and needs media publicity!

I can no longer remain silent because the United States continues to demand my extradition more to serve me on a platter to the media of the world than to pronounce a judgment concerning which an agreement was reached 33 years ago.

I can remain silent no longer because I have been placed under house arrest in Gstaad and bailed in very large sum of money which I have managed to raise only by mortgaging the apartment that has been my home for over 30 years, and because I am far from my family and unable to work.

Such are the facts I wished to put before you in the hope that Switzerland will recognize that there are no grounds for extradition, and that I shall be able to find peace, be reunited with my family, and live in freedom in my native land.

SAVING THE FAIRFAX THEATER

Friends of The Fairfax Theater, threw an 80th birthday party on Saturday, March 27th to draw attention to the recent closing of the Art Deco landmark on Beverly Boulevard. Built in 1929, the theater now faces a threat to its existence by developers who are proposing that the Fairfax and some adjacent shops be turned into a 71-unit condominium complex over retail space and subterranean parking.

The announcement and forced closing has ignited community condemnation and protest.

“Being one of the few remaining neighborhood movie houses left in L.A., let alone the country, the Fairfax has to be saved,” said one protester Saturday afternoon.

The Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation agree. They will be at City Hall on April 1st at 10:00 a.m. to try and get the building officially declared a Los Angeles Landmark. The Foundation was out in force on Saturday to inform celebrants and the neighborhood of the positive economic impact that thousands of movie goers can draw to the neighborhood each week. “We have just begun to fight” they declared.

“We can’t let this beautiful venue be turned into another ugly apartment building” said a member of the Foundation.

Passing traffic seemed to agree. The honking of horns in support of the protest continued almost non stop for over an hour.
